The Italian European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) for the promotion of cybersecurity and the digitalization of micro and small enterprises and public entities operating in the Southern regions.

In the context of rapid technological evolution and the growing importance of cybersecurity for economic competitiveness and institutional resilience, the MicroCyber project stands out as a strategic and structured initiative designed to support the digital transformation and protection of IT infrastructures of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as public administrations (PAs), with a particular focus on Southern Italy.

Promoted by the Italian National Agency for Microcredit (ENM) as coordinator and supported by the European Commission under the Digital Europe Programme, MicroCyber is one of the official European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) in Italy, with a strong emphasis on cybersecurity capacity building.

The initiative is built upon a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach, featuring a consortium that includes academic institutions, research centers, industry associations, and private enterprises. This setup enables the delivery of a comprehensive and integrated portfolio of services, including the assessment of digital maturity through the Digital Maturity Assessment Tool (DMAT), Cyber Range simulations (realistic cybersecurity threat scenarios), online and in-person training sessions, tailored mentoring, and test-before-invest initiatives. The goal is to map out and enhance the digital skills of targeted organizations by designing customized training paths and capacity building strategies to address technological and organizational gaps.

MicroCyber also acts as a facilitator for access to microfinance and financial support tools, which are critical for smaller entities lacking the resources to invest in cybersecurity. Leveraging ENM’s unique experience in microcredit and social entrepreneurship, the project combines technical consulting with financial advisory services, generating tangible impacts in terms of both cyber risk reduction and local economic development.

The operational model includes territory-wide events, digital bootcamps, and networking activities aimed at building a sustainable innovation ecosystem.

Moreover, MicroCyber actively collaborates with other European EDIHs and networks such as the Digital Transformation Accelerator, the European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO), and Enterprise Europe Network, extending its influence and capabilities beyond national borders.

In summary, MicroCyber represents a decentralized digital innovation hub designed to guide SMEs and local public administrations through a secure and conscious digital growth journey. By enhancing cooperation between public and private sectors and connecting local ecosystems with the broader European innovation landscape, MicroCyber contributes to building a more competitive and cyber-resilient economy in Southern Italy.
